week of 11/24/08

this week in science we talked a lot about bacteria cells and animal cells and how to label them. today we talked about plant cells. it was really interesting learning about the bacteria cell expecially because it helped me understand more about what we did with our cleaner experiment.

We learned how to label this bacteria cell. We started talking about it last week, but finished it on monday. I learned what cillia and flagellum are and that they are also on paramecium, euglena, and vortecello.

We talked about the animal cell on Monday and Tuesday and learned what parts are in the cell and how to label it. I didn't know that there were 2 different kidns of Endoplasmic Reticulum, the smooth and the rough. The rough ER has little ribosomes that attatch themselves to the ER that surrounds the nucleus and makes copies of DNA into RNA templates.

The last thing we did was talk about and label a plant cell, like the one above.  I learned a lot about the differences and similarities about plant and animal cells.  For example, I thought that only a plant cell had a vacuole, but actually animal cells can have them too, they are just a lot smaller.

This week in science was very interesting and helped me understand more about cells.  I can't wait until next week!!
